Terra Supra Skin Care - Ama Oils – Natural Occlusives, Great for Skin and Hair!
Confused about the types of moisturizers? Wonder about the uses for our Ama oils?
There are three main types of moisturizers: humectants, emollients, and occlusives. Humectants are hygroscopic substances that form hydrogen bonds with water molecules. This bonding helps moisturize the skin by drawing water from the lower cell layers into the top layer of skin and by pulling moisture from the air to the skin. Aloe Vera is a lovely, natural humectant.
Emollients help fill cracks and cover the skin with a protective film to seal in moisture. Coconut oil and shea butter are examples of natural emollients. Good for most skin types; those with very oily skin should avoid emollients, however. Emollients are best paired with a humectant, or an occlusive such as our Ama oils.
Occlusives provide a thick, protective barrier to prevent water loss. Occlusives create a barrier between your skin and the air, which keeps water sealed inside your skin and helps prevent irritants, allergens, and other harmful particles from being able to enter your skin. Ama flaxseed occlusives are perfect for normal, combination, or dry skin and the high omega-3 Alpha linoleic fatty acid content is extremely beneficial for chronic skin conditions, such as rosacea, acne, dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis.
Our Ama oils are the perfect step seven of your nighttime skincare routine. The proper order for your routine at night is as follows: first, cleanse with a non-soap cleanser (Cerave is one of my favourites). Next use a toner to remove the last traces of dirt or oil, shrink pores, and restore the skin’s pH balance. Follow with a serum for your skin’s needs. A serum can illuminate your skin, treat blemishes, boost hydration, or fight signs of aging (I like the Mad Hippie Day and Night pack). Pat on an eye cream next, and then use an acne spot treatment if necessary (Saje makes one with lavender, tea tree and geranium). Moisturize next, and finally, to seal in all that other good stuff, pat your whole face, neck and décolleté (always remember these areas in your skin routine above), with one of our Ama oils.
Not only are our Ama oils great for your skin, their fatty acid and vitamin content (E, B1, B2, B6, and biotin) provide many wonderful benefits for hair and scalp. If you struggle with a dry, flaky scalp (dandruff) or want to speed hair growth, the antimicrobial and antibacterial properties of Ama Calma lavender infused flaxseed oil are a great scalp conditioner. Apply Ama Calma to your scalp, leave on for at least ten minutes and then shampoo and condition your hair. Repeat this whenever you wash your hair.
All our Ama oils benefit the hair. They seal the cuticle, prevent breakage and split ends, and prevent frizz. In addition, they fight free radicals in your scalp; condition your hair and strengthen your hair by enhancing its elasticity. To use our Ama oils as a hair treatment, wet your hair in a warm shower. When you get out of the shower, massage 2-3 tablespoons of an Ama oil onto your scalp and massage through to the ends of your hair. Wrap your head in a warm towel (just out of the dryer is perfect). Leave on for about fifteen minutes. Wash and condition your hair as normal and enjoy your silky, smooth hair.
Let our lovely oils help you achieve beautiful skin and hair.
With Love, Corinne
